Glumus jugulare

What is it? It is a rare, benign tumour on the jugular vein.
What effects does it have? It can protrude into the middle ear and dislodge or destroy the ossicles and often the eardrum and lead to permanent hearing loss.
It may cause facial palsy by damaging the facial nerve which passes through the middle ear.
It must be treated because:
there is a danger of the growth pressing on brain and damaging it;
there is a danger of it rupturing the jugular vein where it cannot be reached.
What causes it?
What treatment is there?
