What is it? | Age-related deafness |
What effects does it have? | It affects the delicate hair cells in the inner ear, causing a sensorineural hearing loss. Sounds may seem distorted and voices/speech may be difficult to understand, especially in background noise. |
What causes it? | 1. The long term effects of noise causing wear and tear. 2. Decreased blood supply to the inner ear possibly due to heart disease, high blood pressure or arteriosclerosis 3. Hereditary factors. 4. General ageing. |
What treatment is there? | There is no cure for this type of deafness. A hearing aid is usually prescribed, and lipreaidng classes may be of great benefit. |
